Who are you, where are you from?
Where am I from? Well, let’s see. I was born in New York. Raised in Japan and Mississippi, and now I live in South Carolina. Let’s just say South Carolina.

What do you do?
I am a freelance illustrator and author. I combine my love for character design, portraiture, and storytelling to grant others freedom from their personal woes.

Why do you do it?
I illustrate because I want to help steer the youth in the right direction. Today is a crazy world for children to have to grow up in. I aim to educate, entertain, and inspire others. To answer your question, I do it because I have to.

How does the place you live impact upon your work?
I can honestly say that both Eastern and Western cultures have had a huge impact on my work. Having lived in Japan for seven years, all I knew was anime and manga. Therefore, all my drawings were focused on big-eyed, big-haired characters. It was not until I moved to the U.S. that I started drawing figures realistically. Now, I take time to make my subject matter anatomically proportionate, while maintaining a hint of impossibility.

How do you create these images?
My illustrations all start with an idea. After completing absorbing that idea, I take my 2H pencil to my sketchbook. Once the sketch is developed, I move on to Strathmore drawing pad and render with my B and 2B pencils. Once I am satisfied with the drawing, I scan the image. From there, I finish the piece with Illustrator and Photoshop.

Who are your influences?
My major influences are Dr. Seuss and James Jean. Though they bother are completely different from one another in terms of artistry; they both shared one thing in common. That one thing was pure imagination. Dr. Seuss made it clear that the simplest characters can deliver the most powerful messages. James Jean is just an amazing talent that seems to know no bounds. I respect his passion to explore any and all mediums.

What inspires your work?
Life inspires me. My family, friends, strangers, animals, music, literature, you name it. Current events and social causes serve as key inspirational sources. I am also inspired by other artists and their amazing renditions of the world around us and beyond.

What do you like?
I like a lot of things. I like spending time with family and friends. I like watching cartoons and reading manga (huge Naruto fan). I like shoes, cars, high-tech gadgets, things of that nature. I like to read children’s books and philosophy related literature as well. Any and everything that promotes equality and fairness make me happy.
What don’t you like?
I dislike only a few things. I dislike any and every form of bullying, discrimination, and hatred.
