For the past couple of months Creature has been keeping a very close eye on David Litchfeild’s a drawing a day project. Since 1st July the prolific illustrator has been creating a random drawing every day. We asked him a few questions about his project and he let us pick our three favourite pieces to display here on Creaturemag.
The piece above is one of his most recent (4/9/2010). You can check out all of the drawings here: facebook.com/davidlitchfieldillustration. It is great to see how David’s style is developing and merging, he kindly answered some questions about the project.
What is this project?
A Drawing A Day’ is something that I decided to do on my Facebook page where I have to draw and upload a new drawing everyday for the next year.
Why are you embarking on it?
It’s only been the past 6 months or so that I decided to seriously concentrate on illustration on a potential career path, even though I have always drawn. This seems to be a really good way of focusing on illustration and ensuring that I keep practicing and creating stuff. It’s great because now I’ve set myself this task I really need to stick to it. I usually get up an hour early in the morning and draw straight away. It’s bringing all kinds of stuff out of my bleary, sub-awake mind.
What do you hope to achieve?
I really recommend doing something like this for two reasons. First of all I will have a huge body of work, some of which can be used in my portfolio. Secondly, because the drawings are going to be seen by people it adds a different pressure. It’s not just going to be a drawing that stays in my sketchbook and no one looks at. It’s a bit like school in that sense, in that someone is going to be critical about your work (i.e. press the ‘Like’ button or not). Having said that, I deliberately try not to have too much quality control on the whole project. If that particular days drawing is not that great I’ll probably still put it up as I think that it shows something of the creative process. Some days you wont be that inspired to draw a great picture and other days you will.
When did you start?
1st July 2010 and will end on 30th June 2011…..That’s a lot of drawings to go.
Tell us a bit more about yourself…
I went to Camberwell College of Art and Design and did all kinds of silly stuff. I now teach at The Art Centre at Bedford College part time. I was in a band called Tinker Jack (currently on a ‘rest’) and now also play guitar and write songs for a lovely lady called Rebecca De Winter. Dislikes – Rocky 5 and Superman 4 . Likes – Jaws and French comics.
Creature says:
We are impressed by David’s commitment to his creative development and with the consistent quality and talent displayed in each drawing. It’s also really great to observe his different techniques, to see how they are merging and developing into a distinct Litchfield style. We hope he has a show at the end of it, the walls plastered with 365 pieces of intriguing creative output. Enjoy…
