Zhenia was already an active designer and editorial artist in Russia before arriving in England, in 2009, to study illustration. In May 2010, MacMillan Children’s Book Prize highly commended his work. After completing the MA he chose to stay in London, where he freelances for various clients, both in Russia and the UK. Meet Zhenia’s caricatured, cheery and nostalgic world!

Who?
Zhenia Vasiliev, 32 years old.

What?
Illustrations and infographics.

When?
Normal work day hours are the best. The hardest time to work is the weekends!

Where?
I’m based in London. I have a studio in Islington, which is my home too. Due to my freelance lifestyle, I sometimes work out of my studio for other companies on temporary projects.

Why?
That’s the tricky one… I guess, because it is something I love to do that also pays sometimes?

How?
My method is digital printmaking, i.e. I use computer to replicate non-computer methods of producing imagery, to speed up the process when deadlines are stressed. I also enjoy doing conventional printmaking when time allows, or when working on personal projects.
