I was introduced to Lydia’s work by Phil Lately, a striped jumper boy, all crazy about stamps. You’ll get the chance to meet him too, in Lydia’s portfolio. I instantly connected with her (mostly) blue, red and yellow world, peppered with black and white. Not only that… Maybe what stroke me the most was its undeniable grace, joy and harmony. It’s a pleasure Lydia took the time and effort to answer these questions, giving us a worthy glimpse of the creative process that brings her artwork to life.
Who?
Lydia Nichols. Twenty-seven years of age.
What?
Illustration with a side of design and some dabbling in hand/custom type. Doodling, printmaking, and general messing around also make the list.
When?
All the time! I prefer mornings to nights, but sometimes I’ll get up before the sun and other times I’ll head to sleep just as the sun is peeking its head out. I try to work in blocks with frequent stretches and tea breaks.
Where?
These days, I split my time between my home studio and my grad studio in the City of Brotherly Love.
Why?
I really love it, even when it drives me nuts and I think I can’t possible do it. My brain thinks in red-blue-yellow smiling illustrations.
How?
Pencils are my friends, though B and 2B win my affections more than any others. So, I begin with sketching, then move to the computer. First I go to Illustrator and my trusted Wacom tablet before moving into Photoshop and adding back in more drawn/scanned elements. It varies a bit for each piece. Some are more digitally finished then others. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with screenprinting and lithography.
