Now for something rather pretty. Chloe Owens is a textiles designer based in London. Creature loves her 60’s inspired artworks. We asked her a few questions…
Who are you?
My name is Chloe Owens, I’m a freelance textile artist and illustrator, inspired by colour and pattern, particularly from the 1960’s.
What do you do?
I use fabric applique, hand stitch and machine embroidery to create colourful pieces of art, crafts, cushions and toys. I love using vintage fabrics that I find in charity shops and markets, and vintage inspired fabrics. I enjoy cutting out different fabrics and putting them together to make a completely new design.
Why do you do it?
It sort of happened by accident, I started doing it in my spare time after work. Then I realised people liked my designs and that there was no reason I shouldn’t be doing what I love everyday, as a business.
Who are your influences?
I’m not really inspired by any one person in particular. Artists who use a lot of colour in their work, and who use their materials in an unconventional way; I love typographer Rob Ryan. I am also inspired by 20th Century post impressionist illustrators such as Rene Gruau and Toulouse Lautrec. And of course textile artitsts like Laura McCafferty and Donna Wilson, both I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside.
What inspires your work?
1960‘s fabrics and wallpaper, fabric designers like Anna Maria Horner, Amy Butler and Michael Miller, 1950s-1960s children’s book illustrations, scandinavian pattern design.
What do you like?
I like finding lost and unloved fabrics in charity shops and giving them a new lease of life.
I like the Beatles.
I like my cat Jake.
What don’t you like?
I don’t like running out of a one of a kind fabric.
I don’t like animal cruelty.
I don’t like traveling on the underground.
