Jordan Debney

Artist: Jordan Debney
Location: Palmerston North, New Zealand

Who are you?
I am Jordan Debney, a self-taught freelance artist from New Zealand.

What do you do?
I draw monsters that live in my imagination, usually engulfed in vomit. I’ve been told that they’re borderline revolting and borderline adorable at the same time.

Why do you do it?
It’s a relaxation remedy, a stress release that keeps me sane. If I didn’t draw I can safely say I would have wound up in some high security mental facility by now.

How do you create these images?
Usually drawing them directly onto paper, scanning them into the computer then hand drawing the lines in photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

Who are your influences?
James Jean and H.R Giger first got my into drawing. Along with Alex Pardee, Craola Simkins, Jirat Patradoon and MetaMephisto keep my creative veins pulsating.

What inspires your work?
Waking up from my dreams with visions in my head, have a very detailed imagination definitely has it’s advantages. The creatures are a good distraction from whatever though or stressful scenario is going around and round in my head.

How does the place you live impact upon your work?
I am from Palmerston North, New Zealand. I guess living in New Zealand has given me a lot more creative freedom. There aren’t many freelance artists that base their work on their style here. All the people in the art scene in NZ seem to know each other, or know OF each other, it’s kind of like a real big family that will always help you out when needed. In a way being an artist in NZ is beneficial, and not at the same time. I guess it being ‘the small country’ that is it to conquer, makes your goals a more realistic vision to achieve. Then again there isn’t much for a demand for pop-surrealism artists in the first place.

What do you like?
I have a weird connection with Ice Cream, I can’t really explain it. Let’s just say, if ice cream we’re human, our children would be delicious.

What don’t you like?
Supermarkets, they’re too complex for my comprehension. People that wear too much perfume make me physically ill. Also, I’d be very pleased if mannequins and puppets just didn’t exist anymore.
