Who are you?
I’m Billy Mather. I’ve been living and working in Brighton for the last two years, its great down here.
What do you do?
I do a lot of things artistically but it basically comes down to drawing on things! I like the more traditional formats like posters, editorial illustration and so on, but I’m always on the look out for different ways to bring images into peoples day to day lives, public installations, live art.
Why do you do it?
That’s a really tricky question, but a good one. I’m not always the best at getting my point across orally (as this interview will surely prove). I communicate better with a pen!
Who are your influences?
Two Illustrators who I love at the moment are Luke Best (of Peep Show collective) and Ian Stevenson. I like how their work doesn’t sit neatly in any particular genre of illustration. I’m a big fan of Benjamin Shahns work, I’m always surprised he isn’t better known.
What inspires your work?
The silly things that make us laugh but we’re not sure why. The idea that art can make a difference to peoples lives.
What do you like?
When things come together in a way that changes our preconceptions.
What don’t you like?
That’s another tough one, not because I can’t think of anything but because there are so many things I can think of I’d probably come across as quite miserable, when I”m not really. I guess I don’t like trends, or rather, when people or ideas are rejected because they aren’t easy to digest or understand.
