Who are you?
I am Holly, a freelance illustrator based in Worcestershire, I studied Illustration at the University of Worcester.
What do you do?
I specialise in children’s book illustration, I am particularly interested in characters and creating worlds for my characters to live in. I am currently working on a nonsense Verse children’s book that I have written based around a Creature that steals and eats cheese.
Why do you do it?
Because I love it.
How do you create these images?
I hand draw my images, then using handmade textures I add colour digitally. I find that working this way gives my work a unique organic effect.
Who are your influences?
I am influenced by a lot of different forms of visual art ranging from animation and film to other illustrators and fine artists. The paintings of Salvador Dali have been a huge influence on my work. Tim Burton, John Tenniel, Toulous Lautrec and Paula Rego are also influences on my work.
What inspires your work?
I am inspired by nature, I am fascinated by the detail and pattern that you can find in natural objects, I love how everything is unique and not one thing is ever the same. I create my characters by combining different elements of the natural world. Fairy tales and literature also inspire the look of much of my illustrations.
What do you like?
Tea, chocolate buttons, the colour green, red hair, bad horror films, buttons, antlers, cupcakes, butterflies, fairy tales.
What don’t you like?
Seagulls, pizza, ice cream.
