Artist: Stone & Spear – aka Simon Cook

Who are you?
My name’s Simon and I’m the illustrator and designer, Stone and Spear. I’m originally from Worthing, I studied at Nottingham Trent University and am now living and working in London.
What do you do?
I set up Stone and Spear back in 2008 now and have gone onto illustrate for the likes of Design Week, Wired Magazine, Anorak and most recently Computer Arts Magazine, which is out in April. Keep yo eyes peeled. It’s perhaps my combination of striking photographic imagery and bold graphics that has gained international recognition through such publications as Creative Review, Digital Arts, Elephant and Viewpoint.
Having come mainly from a fine art background, I think these sets of skills are rooted into the core of my aesthetic. I always like my designs and illustrations to look like little handcrafted pieces of art.
Mostly I just cut triangles.
Why do you do it?
Because it’s pretty much the best thing ever. Conceived through derived Greek meanings of my middle names, Stone meaning Peter and Spear, meaning Frank, Stone and Spear has been my way of creating a fantasy land where anything is possible…a world in which I could escape the monotonous routine of day-to-day life.
Who are your influences?
Visually, I love the Memphis movement from the early 80’s and I’m greatly inspired by Mary Blair. A Disney design legend. I’m influenced by a lot of things though, especially the circus, space, science and journeys. There’s a strong sense of magic and wonder within my work relating strongly to the Surrealism idea too – exploring dreams, the imagination, and the opposite of reality. I like mashing all this together.
What inspires your work?
Lots of different things. At the moment I’m really into Greek mythology and the Egyptian book of the dead. I love creating creepy creatures to inhabit Stone and Spear.
What do you like?
Cartoons, haribo, space documentaries, lime milkshakes and sea creatures.
What don’t you like?
Snakes. Gummy one’s are fine.
