Who are you?
I am Barney Ibbotson, an illustrator and designer from Manchester, UK.
What do you do?
I create illustrations using hand-drawn and computer techniques, often involving intricate patterns and detailed line-work. I am also involved in graphic design for print and web, and more recently have been working on outdoor murals. I love collaborating on projects, and am planning to work on a phone app in the near future. Fabric and pattern design is an area I’d like to get into as well.
Why do you do it?
I do it because it’s pretty much all I have ever done, since picking up some felt tip pens and a large slab of printer paper as a child. My parents encouraged me so I just kept doing it. I’m still nowhere near achieving what I’d like to though.
Who are your influences?
My influences mainly came from childhood and my college years, from when I pored over illustrated library books and then later as I learned about the history of art. I enjoyed Richard Scarry, Usborne children’s books, and anything related to science fiction, fantasy and history, preferably involving detailed scenes. Later I discovered Gauguin, Egon Schiele, Toulouse Lautrec, and Alfons Mucha, whose clever use of negative space and composition I enjoyed. I also love the imagination and detail of much science fiction illustration, and the visionary work of Moebius, Syd Mead, Carlos Ezquerra and Ralph McQuarrie totally excites and inspires me. In latter years I have been exposed to so many amazing artists via the interenet that it’s sometimes hard to keep up. Currently I am enjoying the work of Matt Lyon (C86), Janine Rewell, Tom Gauld, Hammo, Seb Feraut (Niark1), Audrey Kawasaki and Dan McPharlin. I have also learned a lot from working alongside my best friend and fellow Manchester illustrator Stan Chow, especially with regards to translating hand drawn ideas into sharp, colourful vector illustrations. Other inspirations come from architecture, technology, crafts, graphics, machinery, music and nature.
What do you like?
Heavy music, Manchester, Manchester United, history, viaducts, monkeys, elephants, tea, cities, forests, mountains, PS3, chicken, Barcelona, Berlin, Summer.
What don’t you like?
Harry Potter, Eastenders, sprouts, anything pickled, Adam Sandler, Microsoft Word, coffee, bad architecture, bad manners, litter, auto-tuned pop.
